What is a Flex Fuel Kit and How Does it Work?

FlexFuel conversions have gained popularity in recent years as more people are looking for ways to make more power while reducing their carbon footprint and save money on fuel costs. But what exactly is a FlexFuel conversion and how does it work? In this blog post, we will explain the basics of FlexFuel conversions and why they are worth considering.

What is a FlexFuel conversion?

A FlexFuel conversion is the process of modifying a vehicle's engine to run on a blend of gasoline and ethanol. Ethanol is a renewable fuel made from plant materials, such as corn or sugarcane. By converting a vehicle to FlexFuel, it can run on a variety of fuel blends, from E10 (10% ethanol, 90% gasoline) to E85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline).

How does a FlexFuel conversion work?

A FlexFuel conversion involves installing a fuel composition (Flex Fuel) sensor, a fuel line and or adapter, and a way to tie into the on board electronic control unit (ECU) via an integration harness that can relay fuel contents to the ECU adjust the engine's fuel injection timing and air-fuel mixture based on the ethanol content in the fuel. The Flex Fuel sensor measures the ethanol content in the fuel tank, and the ECU uses this information to optimize the engine's performance.

What are the benefits of a FlexFuel conversion?

There are several benefits to converting a vehicle to FlexFuel:

  • Environmental impact: Ethanol is a renewable fuel that produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to gasoline. By running on ethanol blends, FlexFuel vehicles can help reduce carbon dioxide emissions and decrease dependence on fossil fuels.
  • Cost savings: Ethanol is typically cheaper than gasoline, so running on ethanol blends can lead to significant cost savings over time. Additionally, some states offer tax incentives or discounts on ethanol blends, further reducing the cost of fuel.
  • Increased fuel availability: FlexFuel vehicles can run on a range of ethanol blends, which are becoming more widely available at gas stations across the country. This increased availability makes it easier for FlexFuel vehicle owners to find fuel and if E85 isnt available at your current location, the "flex" part of these systems lets you fill up with traditional gasoline too! No tunes to adjust, no hassle, just fill up and let the sensor do its job to optimize your cars ECU for best performance based on what is in your tank.
  • Incredible Power Potential: Todays Naturally aspirated engines, utilize higher compression, and most recently many use Direct Injection. With these engines, use of Higher Octane fuels is typically standard, but how about getting up to 108 Octane from the same pumps by using E85? Many Engines can see a power an increase of 5% or more with the higher Octane contained in E85, Boosted Applications can see significantly more! In fact, we've seen increases in excess of 100 WHP! switching from 93 octane to e85! No other "bolt on" modification comes close to the same Power per dollar ratio.
