PennGrade 1 Adds Full Synthetic Oils: What 5W-30 vs. 5W-40 Means for Boosted and Track Cars
Performance engines keep asking more from their oil. Higher cylinder pressure, more rpm, tighter modern engine architecture, turbocharger heat, supercharger load, E85 and sustained track use can all raise the consequences of choosing a lubricant by habit instead of by application.
That makes the timing of PennGrade 1's new full synthetic high-performance line especially interesting. Performance Racing Industry's August Race Shop reports that PennGrade 1 has released a new Full Synthetic Motor Oil line aimed at modern, higher-revving and highly stressed engines, with viscosity grades ranging from 0W-20 through 15W-50. PRI also specifically calls out turbocharged, supercharged, direct-injected, E85, alcohol, methanol and race-gas applications.
Just as importantly, PRI's new August 24 feature on lubrication trends in racing makes a broader point: performance oil selection is becoming more application-specific, not simply thicker. Modern race engines are increasingly using lower-viscosity lubricants where clearances, operating temperature and engine design allow it, while high-temperature stability and carefully engineered additive packages remain critical.
So what does 5W-30 vs. 5W-40 actually mean?
The first number and the "W" describe the oil's low-temperature viscosity classification. Both 5W-30 and 5W-40 live in the same 5W winter-viscosity class. The second number describes a different viscosity grade at operating temperature. A 5W-40 is in a higher SAE viscosity grade when hot than a 5W-30.
That does not mean 5W-40 is automatically "better" for a modified engine. Oil viscosity is part of the engine's lubrication system, and the right choice depends on the combination: bearing clearances, oil-pump design, expected oil temperature, rpm, sustained load, fuel dilution, intended use and the engine builder or manufacturer's requirements.
Why performance cars make the decision harder
A stock street car cruising to work and a 900-horsepower road-course car can share the same basic engine family while asking completely different things from their oil. Boost raises cylinder pressure and bearing load. Track sessions hold oil temperature up for minutes at a time instead of seconds. High rpm increases shear and oil demand. Turbochargers add concentrated heat. Ethanol-rich fuels can also make fuel dilution and oil-change strategy more important when an engine spends substantial time cold-starting, idling or making short trips.
PennGrade's official 5W-40 product information says the new formula is engineered for sustained load and elevated temperatures, with emphasis on shear stability, high-temperature protection and anti-wear performance. The company's current product-data library lists six full synthetic high-performance grades: 0W-20, 5W-30, 0W-40, 5W-40, 5W-50 and 15W-50.
When 5W-30 can be the right answer
If the engine manufacturer or builder calls for a 5W-30 and the car maintains healthy oil pressure and temperature under its real operating conditions, moving thicker just because the engine gained horsepower can be the wrong move. Modern engines often use tight clearances, variable cam timing, oil-controlled actuators and carefully sized oil passages that were designed around a particular viscosity range.
For a street-driven performance car, the best oil is not necessarily the one with the highest hot-viscosity number. It is the oil that maintains the required film strength and pressure while flowing correctly through the engine at the temperatures the car actually sees.

When 5W-40 deserves a look
A 5W-40 can make sense in some high-load combinations when the engine builder or manufacturer allows it and the data supports the change. Examples can include engines that see sustained elevated oil temperature, long track sessions, endurance use or combinations where hot oil pressure is marginal with the lighter approved grade.
But viscosity should not be used to cover up a mechanical problem. Falling oil pressure can also point to excessive temperature, bearing clearance, oil-pump issues, oil aeration, pickup problems, fuel dilution or inadequate oil control. If the gauge says something is wrong, the answer is not automatically a thicker bottle.

Don't pick oil from horsepower alone
There is no universal chart that says "600 horsepower equals 5W-30" and "1,000 horsepower equals 5W-40." Two engines making the same power can have completely different bearing clearances, oil temperatures, fuels, rpm ranges and duty cycles.
A better checklist is:
- Start with the OEM or engine builder's allowed viscosity range.
- Know the actual oil temperature. A street pull and a 25-minute road-course session are not the same environment.
- Watch hot oil pressure, not just cold-start pressure.
- Consider fuel and fuel dilution. E85, methanol and rich cold-start operation can change what the oil sees over time.
- Match change intervals to use. A heavily tracked or frequently dyno-tested car should not automatically follow the same interval as a stock commuter.
- Fix mechanical or oil-control problems instead of masking them with viscosity.
Data beats guessing
This is another reason we keep pushing data logging on serious builds. Oil pressure, oil temperature, coolant temperature, engine speed, load and fuel data tell a much better story together than any one dashboard gauge. The same logic applies to oil. If a change from 5W-30 to 5W-40 is being considered for a modified combination, make that decision around the engine's requirements and real operating data, not forum folklore.
