WELD Wheels Fitment Decoded: The Part-Number Clues, Pad Heights and Backspacing Nobody Explains
A WELD wheel can be listed as 17x10 and still be completely wrong for your car. Diameter and width only describe the beginning of the fitment. The bolt pattern, center bore, backspacing, offset, mounting-pad height, brake package, lug-seat style, barrel profile and tire all determine whether the wheel clears, sits correctly and works safely.
This guide explains the clues hidden in common WELD part numbers, what low, medium and high pad actually mean, how backspacing relates to offset, and how the forged RT-S and RM lines compare with the flow-formed Performance RF series.

Quick answer: why WELD fitment feels harder than it should
Most wheel shoppers begin with a vehicle and a diameter. WELD often begins with an engineered wheel configuration. One design may be offered in several widths, pad heights, backspacing measurements, bolt patterns and brake-clearance profiles. Two wheels that look identical in a photo can place the inner barrel or spokes in very different locations.

Decoding the clues in a WELD part number
WELD part numbers are not one universal VIN-style code that can be decoded identically across every series. However, repeated patterns give useful clues. The exact product specification and WELD fitment table always control the final decision.
Example 1: S71 high-pad polished 17x11
One active SMG listing uses the manufacturer portion 71HP7110B77G:
- 71 identifies the S71 style family.
- H indicates a high-pad configuration.
- P is the polished finish clue in this configuration.
- 7110 corresponds to the 17x11.0 size in this series.
- B is the bolt-pattern code used for the 5x4.75, or 5x120.65, version shown in the listing.
- 77 corresponds to 7.7 inches of backspacing.
- The final suffix identifies the remaining exact engineering, hardware or finish configuration and should be matched to the catalog record.

Example 2: S77 high-pad polished 17x5
The active 77HP7050B22A listing follows a similar pattern: S77 style, high pad, polished finish, 17x5.0 size, 5x4.75 bolt pattern and 2.2 inches of backspacing.

Part-number rule that prevents expensive mistakes
Use the code as a clue, not as the fitment approval. Confirm the full manufacturer number, vehicle, brake package, center bore, lug seat, backspacing, offset and brake template before ordering.
Low, medium and high pad explained
Pad height describes the mounting-pad and spoke geometry near the hub. It is especially important on the forged RT-S line because changing this geometry can create or remove room for large calipers.

A high-pad wheel is not a universal big-brake guarantee. A brake package must clear in two directions:
- Radial clearance: the caliper must fit inside the wheel barrel.
- Axial clearance: the face of the caliper must clear the back of the spokes and mounting pad.
A wheel can pass one test and fail the other. That is why a printable brake template or verified vehicle-specific fitment is more valuable than simply choosing the highest pad.
Backspacing versus offset
Offset measures the hub-mounting surface relative to the wheel centerline. Positive offset moves the wheel inward. Negative offset moves it outward.
Backspacing measures from the hub-mounting surface to the wheel's inner edge. More backspacing generally moves more of the wheel inward, reducing outer poke but tightening clearance to shocks, control arms, uprights and inner bodywork.
Useful conversion
Approximate offset in millimeters = (backspacing minus half of the overall wheel width) x 25.4
Overall wheel width is not the same as advertised bead-seat width. A wheel advertised as 10 inches wide is commonly close to 11 inches overall, but the exact measured width should be used whenever possible.
Example: An 18x10 wheel with 7.1 inches of backspacing is approximately 11 inches overall. Half is 5.5 inches. The difference is 1.6 inches. Multiplying 1.6 by 25.4 produces about +41 mm of offset.
Why offset alone can mislead you
A +30 mm offset on a 9-inch wheel does not place the inner and outer lips in the same locations as +30 mm on a 12-inch wheel. Width and offset must always be considered together.
Same diameter, width and bolt pattern, very different placement

The ET30 wheel places the assembly about 30 mm farther inward than the ET0 version. It creates more outer tuck, but also consumes roughly 30 mm more inner clearance. This is exactly why choosing by diameter, width and bolt pattern alone can produce an expensive surprise.

Performance RF is not just a basic cast wheel
The Performance RF line begins with a cast aluminum preform, but its barrel is mechanically flow formed. WELD describes the process as producing a wheel that is lighter than traditional cast construction with improved tensile strength and impact capacity. It occupies the useful middle ground between a conventional cast street wheel and a fully forged race wheel.
Why exact wheel weights are often missing or misunderstood
There is no honest single weight for an entire WELD series. Weight changes with diameter, width, pad height, backspacing, center bore, beadlock hardware, HD construction and load rating. A 15x10 non-beadlock Performance RF wheel should not be compared with an 18x12 RT-S beadlock and used to declare one entire line lighter.
For a valid comparison, use the exact manufacturer number and compare wheels with the same size, bolt pattern, backspacing and beadlock status. Beadlock rings and hardware add mass, while HD truck versions may intentionally carry more material for load capacity.
Strength is more than material
Forging and flow forming matter, but engineering matters too. WELD uses finite-element analysis, rotational-mass evaluation and destructive testing to optimize material placement. A properly engineered wheel is designed around its intended load, tire, vehicle and use rather than simply being made as thin as possible.
Lug hardware, center bore and brake details
Do not assume all WELD wheels use the same lug hardware. WELD's S71 information notes that 15-inch applications commonly use shank-style lugs, while many 17, 18 and 20-inch versions use conical-seat hardware. Confirm the exact wheel, stud diameter, thread pitch, lug seat and required engagement.
Also verify:
- Vehicle hub diameter and wheel center bore
- Hub-centric ring requirements, if applicable
- Factory or aftermarket brake package
- Caliper template clearance
- Wheel-stud length and open or closed lug requirement
- Beadlock legality and intended tire use
- Tire section width and sidewall bulge, not only tread width
- Suspension travel, steering lock and alignment settings
