2027 HEMI Ram balanced performance truck build guide showing tire, suspension, brakes, gearing, steering, ADAS and exhaust planning

The 2027 HEMI Ram Gets the Roush Treatment: 5 Lessons for Building a Better Performance Truck

The HEMI is back in the Ram 1500, and Roush did not waste much time showing what a properly integrated performance truck can look like.

SEMA News recently highlighted the new 2027 Ram 1500 Direct Connection by Roush, an OEM-backed package built on a Big Horn Crew Cab 4x4 with the 5.7L HEMI V8. The package combines a purpose-built 2-inch coil-over suspension, 18-inch wheels, 33-inch General Grabber A/TX tires, an active cat-back exhaust, exterior upgrades and premium interior touches while retaining factory towing capability and advanced driver-assistance compatibility.

The headline attraction is naturally the return of the HEMI. The more useful lesson, however, is that Roush treated the truck as a complete system. Suspension height, tire diameter, damping, axle ratio, exhaust behavior, towing and electronic systems were considered together instead of being assembled as a random parts list.

What the 2027 Ram 1500 Direct Connection by Roush Includes

According to Roush, the package includes a platform-specific 2-inch coil-over suspension with custom-tuned twin-tube dampers, 18-inch Roush wheels, 33-inch General Grabber A/TX tires, a 3.92 rear axle ratio, an electronic locking rear differential, skid plates and trailer brake control. It also uses a driver-selectable active cat-back exhaust with Open and Closed valve modes.

Roush states that the suspension is engineered to preserve proper geometry and that the completed package maintains factory towing capability and ADAS compatibility. The company also cites validation to FMVSS 105, 126 and 135, along with SAE J2807 towing standards.

That makes the truck an excellent case study for anyone planning a Ram build, even if a complete dealer-delivered Roush package is not in the budget.

Lesson 1: Choose the Tire Before Finalizing the Suspension

Many truck builds begin with a lift-height number. That is backwards. The tire diameter, tire width, wheel offset, load rating and intended use should help determine the suspension package.

A larger tire changes more than appearance. It can affect effective gearing, acceleration, braking leverage, steering effort, scrub radius, unsprung mass, fender clearance, ride quality and towing behavior.

The Roush package uses a relatively moderate 33-inch tire with a 2-inch lift, which is a practical combination for a truck expected to work on the highway, tow and travel off pavement. Customers building their own trucks should start by defining the intended tire and use case, then select from SMG's Ram 1500 suspension upgrades, truck wheels and tire options that support that goal.

Lesson 2: Lift Height Is Not the Same as Suspension Engineering

Two kits that both advertise a 2-inch lift can behave very differently. Spring rate, damper calibration, available travel, bump-stop engagement, alignment range and control-arm geometry determine how the truck actually drives.

A well-matched coil-over and damper package should control body motion without making the truck harsh over sharp impacts. It also needs enough droop and compression travel for the intended terrain. Simply increasing preload or installing a spacer may achieve the stance, but it does not automatically improve damping, travel or geometry.

After any height change, verify alignment, brake-hose routing, ABS wiring, CV-joint angles, ball-joint articulation and tire clearance through full steering lock and suspension travel. That inspection is especially important when wheel offset or tire width changes at the same time.

Lesson 3: An Active Cat-Back Is About Usable Sound, Not Imaginary Horsepower

The Roush active exhaust gives the driver Open and Closed modes. That is valuable because a truck can sound aggressive when desired without being exhausting during towing, commuting or a long highway trip.

A cat-back can reduce restriction and change sound, but customers should not assume that every exhaust system produces a major horsepower increase on an otherwise stock naturally aspirated engine. Pipe diameter, muffler design, exhaust routing and the rest of the engine combination matter.

For HEMI Ram owners who want a proven system now, SMG carries options such as the Borla S-Type cat-back for the 2019-plus 5.7L Ram 1500 Crew Cab, along with additional Ram 1500 exhaust systems. Verify cab, bed, wheelbase, drivetrain and model-year fitment before ordering.

Lesson 4: Larger Tires Make Brakes, Gearing and Calibration More Important

A larger and heavier wheel-and-tire package increases rotational inertia. The brakes must absorb that energy during every stop, while the engine and transmission must accelerate it every time the truck moves.

The 3.92 axle ratio used in the Roush package helps offset some of the effective gearing loss associated with taller tires. On a customer build, the correct answer depends on tire diameter, transmission gearing, vehicle weight, towing load and how the truck is driven.

Brake condition matters just as much. Quality pads, rotors, fluid and properly functioning hoses should be evaluated before adding tire mass or towing weight. Lesson 5: Keep Towing, ADAS and Daily Drivability in the Plan

Modern trucks are integrated vehicles. Ride height, tire diameter and wheel offset can influence alignment, electronic stability control behavior, camera and radar aim, speedometer accuracy and towing confidence.

Roush's emphasis on retained factory towing capability and ADAS compatibility is not marketing filler. It is a reminder that a performance truck should remain good at being a truck.

When planning a build, document the truck's exact configuration and intended load. Account for GVWR, payload, tire load rating, trailer tongue weight, rear suspension support, brake capacity, alignment, ADAS calibration, speedometer accuracy, transmission behavior and cooling needs.

SMG offers a wide range of Ram lighting, towing and load-support products, suspension components, exhaust systems, brakes, wheels and tires. The goal is not to sell the largest part in every category. It is to build a combination that works together.

Does a 2027 HEMI Ram Need a Tune for Basic Bolt-Ons?

A cat-back exhaust, wheels, tires and a properly designed suspension package do not automatically require engine tuning. Tire-size changes may require speedometer and shift-behavior correction, while engine modifications that materially change airflow, fueling or cylinder pressure can require calibration.

Before assuming a tune is or is not required, review our article: Can You Drive It Without a Tune? The correct answer depends on the exact modification and vehicle strategy, not the marketing label on the box.

The Best Part of the Roush Ram Is the Complete-System Thinking

The 2027 Ram 1500 Direct Connection by Roush is timely because the HEMI's return gives truck enthusiasts something worth talking about. Its larger value is that it demonstrates how a balanced build should be planned:

  1. Define the truck's real job.
  2. Select the tire and wheel package.
  3. Match suspension travel and damping to that package.
  4. Recheck brakes, gearing, steering, calibration and towing.
  5. Add sound, appearance and power without sacrificing usability.
