Is the 2028 Camaro Really Coming Back? Confirmed Facts, Credible Reports and the Rumors

The headlines are everywhere: the 2028 Chevrolet Camaro is coming back. Some stories even read as though Chevrolet has already revealed the car, confirmed the engines and signed off on a traditional two-door coupe.
That is not where the public record stands.
There is now a credible, increasingly detailed body of reporting that points toward a new Camaro-related program. Supplier information reported by major automotive outlets places it on an updated rear-wheel-drive architecture, at GM's Lansing Grand River plant, with production potentially beginning in late 2027 for the 2028 model year. Other reports add an internal-combustion powertrain, a manual transmission and at least one high-performance version.
But as of July 25, 2026, General Motors and Chevrolet have not officially announced a 2028 Camaro. Chevrolet has declined to comment on the current product reports. The final body style, engine lineup, horsepower, trim names, price and reveal date remain unconfirmed.
SMG verdict: The return story is credible enough to take seriously. The final vehicle shown in many headlines is not confirmed, and the renderings circulating online are illustrations, not Chevrolet product photography.
What Chevrolet Has Actually Confirmed
The sixth-generation Camaro ended after the 2024 model year
Chevrolet announced in March 2023 that sixth-generation Camaro production would conclude with the 2024 model year. The final cars came from Lansing Grand River in January 2024. Chevrolet did not announce an immediate successor at that time, but the company deliberately left the door open by stating that the retirement was not the end of the Camaro story.

Lansing Grand River remains a performance-car plant
GM has publicly confirmed continued Cadillac CT4 and CT5 production at Lansing Grand River, including the V-Series models. GM also announced major investment in the facility and said it would share future product, timing and volume details later.
That does not confirm Camaro production, but it matters. Lansing already has experience building Alpha-platform rear-wheel-drive cars, including the sixth-generation Camaro, CT4 and CT5.

GM is developing a next-generation Cadillac CT5
GM confirmed in its October 2025 shareholder letter that a next-generation CT5 is under development. The same letter emphasized that internal-combustion demand is expected to remain stronger for longer and noted major investment in a new generation of V8 engines.
This gives the reported Camaro program a plausible business foundation. A Chevrolet performance model sharing architecture, plant capacity and supplier investment with a new CT5 is easier to justify than an entirely independent low-volume coupe.

What Reputable Industry Reports Are Saying
The most important recent reporting traces back to supplier sources rather than a Chevrolet press release.
Car and Driver summarized an Automotive News report citing an anonymous source at a major GM supplier. According to that report:
- A next-generation Camaro, next-generation Cadillac CT5 and a new Buick sedan are planned around a shared rear-wheel-drive platform.
- The architecture is expected to be an updated version of Alpha, which underpins the current CT4 and CT5 and underpinned the sixth-generation Camaro.
- Camaro and CT5 production could begin at Lansing Grand River in fall 2027.
- The two programs could account for a combined 60,000 to 75,000 vehicles annually.

MotorTrend separately covered the return report and noted that Chevrolet declined to comment on speculative future-product reports. MotorTrend also emphasized that the shape and powertrain remain uncertain.
GM Authority has published additional source-based claims that the program includes a manual transmission, a high-performance variant and a four-door body style. Those details are interesting, but they still belong in the reported category until GM confirms them.
Why an Updated Alpha Platform Makes Sense
The sixth-generation Camaro proved that GM's Alpha architecture could support a genuinely world-class chassis. Even the standard cars had excellent body control and steering response, while the SS 1LE, ZL1 and ZL1 1LE demonstrated how far the platform could be pushed with the right brakes, dampers, tires, cooling and calibration.
An updated Alpha-based platform would let GM spread major development and tooling costs across Cadillac, Chevrolet and possibly Buick. It would also allow Camaro engineers to retain the basic ingredients enthusiasts care about:
- Front-engine packaging
- Rear-wheel drive
- Available limited-slip differential hardware
- Room for serious brakes and tires
- Internal-combustion and potentially hybrid performance options
- A chassis suitable for both street use and track-focused variants
This platform decision is more consequential than the shape of an early rendering. The architecture determines suspension geometry, drivetrain packaging, brake capacity, wheel fitment, cooling space and the basic ceiling for future aftermarket development.
Coupe or Four-Door? This Is the Biggest Unresolved Question
The current reports do not agree on the final body configuration.
Some coverage assumes a traditional two-door pony car because that is what Camaro has historically been. GM Authority's source-based reporting points toward a four-door car. Other industry analysis leaves room for multiple body styles or a fastback-like performance sedan that uses Camaro branding without copying the sixth-generation formula.
A four-door Camaro would be controversial, but the business logic is easy to understand. Two-door coupe demand is limited. A rear-wheel-drive performance sedan could reach buyers who need usable rear doors while still competing for the same emotional space as the Mustang, Charger and premium sport sedans.
A coupe would preserve the clearest link to Camaro heritage. Building both would satisfy enthusiasts, but it would also increase tooling complexity and cost.
Bottom line: anyone claiming the final car is definitely a coupe or definitely a sedan is moving ahead of the available evidence.
Will the 2028 Camaro Have a V8?
A V8 is not officially confirmed for a Camaro. It is, however, a reasonable expectation for at least one high-performance version.
GM has publicly committed significant investment to a new generation of advanced V8 engines. The company is extending its internal-combustion portfolio, and a Camaro positioned as a true performance flagship would be difficult to sell against V8-powered rivals without a serious eight-cylinder option.
That does not verify the displacement, output or engine code. Claims about a specific 6.2-liter, 6.7-liter, naturally aspirated, supercharged or hybrid-assisted Camaro engine should still be treated as projections until Chevrolet releases specifications.
A broad lineup could include a lower-cost turbocharged engine, a V8 performance model and an electrified or hybrid-assisted variant. It could also be much simpler. At this stage, exact engine charts are guesswork.
What About a Manual Transmission?
The manual-transmission report is one of the most encouraging details for enthusiasts, but it is not an official specification.
A manual would give the program immediate credibility and distinguish it from many modern performance vehicles. It would also preserve a major part of the Camaro's identity. The sixth-generation car offered excellent manual gearboxes, rev matching and drivetrain combinations that supported everything from daily driving to serious track use.
Still, supplier sourcing, emissions certification, projected volume and final powertrain decisions can change before production. Treat the manual as a credible report, not a dealer-orderable fact.
SS, Z/28 or ZL1? The Names Are Still Speculation
Reports of a high-performance model are believable. The trim name is not known.
Chevrolet has a deep catalog of valuable performance badges, including SS, 1LE, Z/28 and ZL1. Internet stories often attach those names to imaginary horsepower numbers because familiar badges make stronger headlines. Chevrolet may reuse them, revise them or introduce something different.
The real questions are more important than the badge:
- Will the car have adequate brake and differential cooling?
- Will track-focused models receive wider wheels and proper high-temperature tires?
- Will the suspension use adaptive dampers, conventional performance dampers or both?
- How much room will the chassis offer for wider aftermarket wheel and tire combinations?
- Will the engine management system remain accessible to legitimate calibration tools?
- How will hybridization, encryption and advanced driver-assistance systems affect modification?
Those Blue 2028 Camaro Images Are Renderings
The blue cars appearing across Google News and social media are not official Chevrolet photographs. They are speculative renderings used to illustrate reporting about a possible future vehicle.
A rendering can be useful for imagining proportions, but it does not reveal production sheet metal, wheelbase, track width, brake package, engine, interior or manufacturing approval. Reposting a rendering hundreds of times does not turn it into a prototype photo.

What GM has not confirmed is the Camaro itself.
