The Performance Aftermarket Isn’t Dying: What SEMA’s $52.92 Billion Report Means for Your Build

Every few months, another headline claims the performance-car market is disappearing. New vehicles are more complicated, financing costs are high, traditional coupes are less common and electrification continues to grow. It is easy to turn those facts into a gloomy story about the future of modifying cars and trucks.

The actual sales data tells a very different story.

According to the newly released 2026 SEMA Market Report, U.S. consumers spent $52.92 billion on automotive accessory and performance products in 2025. Approximately one in four vehicle owners bought parts to personalize, improve or enhance a vehicle. More than half of those buyers were under 40, and internal-combustion vehicles are still expected to remain the dominant new-vehicle powertrain through the next decade.

That does not describe a dying industry. It describes a market that is changing, widening and becoming more technically demanding.

$52.92 Billion Is More Than Enthusiast Nostalgia

The specialty-equipment market includes everything from wheels, tires and suspension to engine parts, exhaust, brakes, lighting, towing equipment, truck accessories and tuning hardware. The total matters because it shows that owners are still willing to invest in vehicles after the original purchase.

More importantly, SEMA found that most customers are not modifying a dedicated show car or weekend race car. They are upgrading everyday vehicles. A daily-driven Mustang may get a better wheel and tire package. A Camaro may receive headers, cooling upgrades and a tune. A Corvette owner may improve fuel delivery before adding boost. A truck owner may combine a leveling kit, wheels, tires, lighting and towing support.

That broad customer base is why the aftermarket can stay healthy even when one particular nameplate disappears, changes body styles or takes a few years off. Owners still want better sound, better stance, more traction, stronger braking, useful power and a vehicle that feels like their own.

Pickups Are the Largest Segment, but They Are Not the Whole Story

SEMA reports that pickup-related products accounted for 30% of total industry sales in 2025. Owners spent more than $15 billion modifying trucks for work, towing, off-road recreation and appearance.

That creates obvious demand for truck suspension, wheels, tires, lighting, towing equipment, exhaust and braking upgrades. It also explains why a properly planned truck build has to be treated as a system. Larger tires affect effective gearing, braking leverage, steering load, alignment, ride quality and advanced driver-assistance calibration.

Traditional performance cars still matter, too. Coupes, sedans and convertibles account for more than one-third of the vehicles currently on American roads. That is a massive installed base of Mustangs, Camaros, Corvettes, Challengers, Chargers, CTS-Vs and other platforms that will need replacement parts and continue to receive upgrades for years.

The recent interest in the reported 2028 Camaro return proves how much demand remains for attainable, internal-combustion performance vehicles.

Younger Buyers Are Not Abandoning Performance

More than half of accessory and performance buyers are under 40, according to SEMA. The report also says younger consumers are more likely to take on complex, performance-focused builds than older buyers.

That does not necessarily mean they are building cars the same way previous generations did. Modern enthusiasts often start with turbocharged, supercharged or direct-injected platforms. Their projects may require data logging, electronic boost control, ethanol-content sensing, fuel-pressure monitoring, transmission calibration and careful integration with factory safety systems.

The parts still matter, but the combination matters more.

A larger supercharger or turbocharger cannot safely deliver its potential without enough fuel, cooling and calibration. Headers may shift airflow enough to require tuning. E85 requires more fuel volume than gasoline. A camshaft changes airflow, idle behavior, vacuum, converter requirements and the usable RPM range.

Internal Combustion Is Still the Center of the Market

Electric and hybrid vehicles now represent more than 15% of new-vehicle sales, and the aftermarket will continue developing products for them. That growth is real. It does not mean internal combustion is about to vanish.

SEMA expects gasoline and diesel vehicles to remain the dominant new-vehicle powertrains in the United States through the next decade. The existing vehicle fleet is also enormous, and the average vehicle continues to get older.

At the same time, hybrids and EVs create new opportunities in chassis tuning, wheels, tires, braking, cooling and appearance. The platforms may change, but the desire to personalize and improve a vehicle does not.

High Vehicle Prices Can Actually Strengthen the Aftermarket

SEMA’s recent industry update notes that financing costs and vehicle prices are causing many owners to keep their existing vehicles longer.

For an enthusiast, improving a paid-off or nearly paid-off car can make more sense than replacing it with a much more expensive new vehicle. A carefully selected suspension package, better brakes, modern tires, cooling improvements and a reliable power package can transform a familiar platform without taking on another large payment.

This also raises the value of maintenance-first modifications. A fifteen-year-old performance car should not receive more boost before its fuel pressure, cooling system, belts, hoses, ignition system and drivetrain condition are verified. An older truck should not receive larger tires without checking ball joints, steering components, wheel bearings and braking capacity.

The Smart Build Order Has Not Changed

The market may be larger and the electronics may be more advanced, but the best build order remains straightforward.

1. Establish a Baseline

Scan the vehicle, inspect it, log it and fix existing problems. Verify fuel pressure, temperatures, ignition health, fluid condition and mechanical integrity. A new part cannot repair a weak foundation.

2. Build Control Before Chasing a Number

Tires, brakes and suspension determine whether the vehicle can use its power. A wheel package should be selected by actual offset, backspacing, load rating and brake clearance, not only appearance. 3. Match Airflow, Fuel and Calibration

Power parts should be selected as a combination. Airflow changes affect fuel demand. Ethanol increases required volume. More boost increases heat. Camshaft and converter choices change how the engine operates in the real world. Choose the parts around the intended use instead of stacking random upgrades.

4. Test the Vehicle Hot

A combination is not proven because it completes one cool dyno pull. Validate pressure, temperature, lambda, timing, boost and repeatability after the vehicle is heat-soaked. Our guide to summer heat soak explains why a strong first pull can hide a weak cooling system.

The Opportunity Is Bigger, but Bad Information Is More Expensive

A $52.92 billion market attracts excellent manufacturers, knowledgeable shops and better technology. It also attracts vague fitment claims, copied product descriptions and parts selected only because they are popular on social media.

The right question is not simply, “What is the biggest part I can buy?” It is, “What is the first limit in my current combination, and what supporting systems will the next upgrade affect?”

That approach saves money, reduces downtime and produces a vehicle that performs consistently instead of becoming a collection of expensive mismatched parts.
