$15 Billion in Pickup Mods: What Silverado & Sierra Owners Should Upgrade First

Pickup trucks are not a side category in the performance aftermarket anymore. They are one of the biggest parts of it.

According to SEMA's newly released 2026 Market Report, Americans spent $52.92 billion on specialty automotive accessories and performance products in 2025. Pickup-related products accounted for 30% of the entire market, with owners spending more than $15 billion modifying their trucks.

For SMG Speed Shop customers, that trend is easy to understand. A Silverado or Sierra can be the daily driver, tow vehicle, family hauler and weekend toy at the same time. The same truck that needs to pull a trailer on Friday can be headed to the drag strip, autocross or dyno on Saturday. That makes the order in which the truck is modified especially important.

The best truck build is a system, not a pile of parts

There is no universal shopping list that fits every Silverado or Sierra. A naturally aspirated 5.3L street truck, a 6.2L daily driver, a supercharged tow rig and a lowered performance truck all need different combinations. But there is a smart order of operations that keeps the truck usable while leaving room to grow.

1. Start with airflow that supports the end goal

An intake is one of the most common first modifications because it is relatively simple, improves the sound and response of the truck, and can support later power upgrades. The key is choosing an intake that fits the actual engine and model year rather than buying whatever has the biggest tube in the advertisement.

For 2019-and-newer GM half-ton applications, SMG carries several aFe systems including the aFe Momentum GT Pro DRY S intake for 2019 GM Silverado/Sierra 1500 4.3L, 5.3L and 6.2L applications and the aFe Magnum FORCE Stage-2 Pro 5R system. Earlier 2014-2019 5.3L and 6.2L trucks are also covered by the aFe Pro 5R intake system.

The important point is not that every truck needs an intake first. It is that any airflow change should make sense with the rest of the planned combination.

2. Exhaust should be selected for the truck you actually drive

A performance exhaust can improve sound and reduce restriction, but louder is not automatically faster. Pipe diameter, muffler design, engine displacement, camshaft choice, forced induction and intended use all matter. A truck that spends most of its life towing at 2,000 rpm may need a different exhaust strategy than a naturally aspirated street truck that lives above 5,000 rpm on weekends.

3. Fueling becomes the priority as power rises

Once the truck moves beyond basic bolt-ons, fuel delivery stops being an afterthought. Ethanol blends, larger injectors, higher cylinder pressure and forced induction all increase fuel demand. A truck can have a capable supercharger and a great calibration, but neither can compensate for fuel pressure that falls away under load.

This is where data matters. Fuel pressure, commanded versus actual lambda, injector duty, ethanol content and pump voltage should be evaluated together. The same lesson applies to trucks as it does to the Corvette fuel-system combinations we recently covered in our DW400 fuel-pressure and E85 guide: a pump's advertised flow number is only one part of the complete system.

4. Forced induction changes the whole conversation

A positive-displacement supercharger is one of the fastest ways to transform a V8 GM truck because it adds torque throughout the operating range rather than only at the top of the tach. But a supercharger should be treated as a complete system upgrade, not a single bolt-on.

For 2014-2018 5.3L GM trucks and related SUVs, SMG carries the Magnuson TVS2650 Supercharger System. Once boost enters the plan, the conversation also includes fuel supply, spark plugs, belt drive, intercooler performance, intake-air temperature, transmission strategy and calibration.

5. Do not build horsepower on top of a chassis that cannot use it

SEMA's pickup-market data also highlights how much truck owners spend on suspension, wheels and tires. That makes sense because power is only useful if the truck can put it down, stop repeatedly and remain predictable.

Lowered street trucks need usable suspension travel and correct alignment geometry. Lifted trucks need proper steering and driveline geometry. High-power trucks need tire capacity, brake condition and rear-suspension control that match the new torque level. The same principle we covered in our suspension setup guide applies here: ride height by itself is not a handling strategy.

6. Tune and validate the combination instead of guessing

The final piece is calibration and validation. Modern GM trucks are highly integrated. Engine torque management, transmission behavior, electronic throttle control, fuel pressure, knock control and thermal protection all interact. A good tune is not simply an aggressive timing table or a dyno screenshot.

What should you upgrade first?

If the truck is otherwise healthy, a sensible street-performance progression usually looks like this:

  1. Define the goal: towing torque, naturally aspirated response, boosted street power, drag use or handling.
  2. Baseline the truck: maintenance, fuel quality, tires, brakes, cooling and scan data.
  3. Improve airflow and exhaust where the combination needs it.
  4. Plan fuel delivery before adding major cylinder pressure.
  5. Add the power adder only when the supporting systems are ready.
  6. Match suspension, tires and brakes to the new performance level.
  7. Calibrate and validate the complete truck under real load.

SEMA's latest numbers show that truck owners are already spending at an enormous scale. The opportunity is not simply to bolt more parts onto more pickups. It is to build trucks that work better as complete vehicles.
